Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Setup Guide

Learn how to set up and use two-factor authentication to secure your Preczn account

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your Preczn account by requiring a verification code from your mobile device in addition to your password.

Before You Begin

You'll need an authenticator app installed on your mobile device. We recommend:

📱

Tip: Install your authenticator app before starting the MFA setup process.

First-Time Login: Setting Up MFA

When you log in to Preczn for the first time, you'll be guided through the MFA enrollment process.

Step 1: Log In with Your Credentials

Enter your email address and password on the login page, then click Sign In.

Step 2: Start MFA Enrollment

After successful login, you'll see the MFA enrollment screen. Click Get Started to begin setup.

Grace Period: You may have the option to skip MFA setup temporarily. If available, you'll see a "Skip for now" option with the date by which MFA will be required. We recommend setting up MFA immediately for better account security.

Step 3: Scan the QR Code

  1. Open your authenticator app on your mobile device
  2. Tap the + button to add a new account
  3. Select Scan QR Code (or "Scan barcode")
  4. Point your camera at the QR code displayed on screen
🔑

Can't scan the code? The secret key is displayed below the QR code. Copy it using the Copy button and manually enter it in your authenticator app by selecting "Enter setup key" or "Manual entry."

Step 4: Verify Your Setup

  1. Your authenticator app will display a 6-digit code
  2. Enter this code in the verification field
  3. Click Verify

Success! You'll be redirected to your dashboard. MFA is now enabled on your account.

Daily Login with MFA

Once MFA is enabled, here's what to expect each time you log in:

  1. Enter your email and password
  2. Click Sign In
  3. Open your authenticator app
  4. Enter the current 6-digit code shown in the app
  5. Click Verify
⏱️

Code Timing: Authenticator codes refresh every 30 seconds. If your code is about to expire, wait for a new one to appear before entering it.

Common Challenges & Troubleshooting

"Invalid MFA Code" Error

Possible causes and solutions:

CauseSolution
Code has expiredWait for a new code and try again
Time sync issueEnsure your phone's time is set to automatic
Wrong accountVerify you're using the code for your Preczn account
TypoDouble-check you've entered all 6 digits correctly
💡

Pro Tip: You can paste codes directly into the verification field. Copy from your authenticator app and paste for accuracy.

Account Locked After Failed Attempts

After 5 consecutive failed MFA attempts, your account will be temporarily locked for security.

What to do:

  1. Wait 15 minutes for the automatic unlock
  2. Ensure you're using the correct authenticator account
  3. Try logging in again with a fresh code
🔒

If you continue to have issues after the lockout period, contact Preczn Support for assistance.

Lost Access to Your Authenticator App

If you've lost your phone or can no longer access your authenticator app:

  1. Contact Preczn Support — Our team can reset your MFA enrollment
  2. Once reset, your MFA will be completely removed from your account
  3. On your next login, you'll go through the full MFA enrollment process again with a new QR code and secret key
⚠️

Important: Preczn does not currently support backup codes. Always ensure you have a backup method to access your authenticator app (such as Authy's cloud backup feature). An MFA reset is a complete removal — you will need to set up MFA from scratch.

QR Code Won't Scan

If your camera can't scan the QR code:

  1. Ensure adequate lighting on the screen
  2. Clean your phone's camera lens
  3. Try adjusting the distance between your phone and the screen
  4. Use manual entry: Click "Can't scan the code?" and enter the secret key manually

Authenticator App Shows Wrong Code

If codes consistently fail:

  1. Check your phone's time settings:
    • Go to Settings → Date & Time
    • Enable "Set automatically" or "Automatic date and time"
  2. In Google Authenticator:
    • Tap the menu (⋮) → Settings → Time correction for codes → Sync now
  3. Try verifying again with a fresh code

Best Practices for MFA Security

Do's ✅

  • Keep your authenticator app updated to the latest version
  • Enable cloud backup if your authenticator app supports it (Authy, Microsoft Authenticator)
  • Set up MFA immediately rather than using the grace period
  • Secure your phone with a PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition

Don'ts ❌

  • Don't share your secret key with anyone
  • Don't screenshot your QR code — if you need a backup, use your authenticator app's built-in backup feature
  • Don't disable your phone's automatic time sync
  • Don't share verification codes — Preczn will never ask for your MFA code via email or phone

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use MFA on multiple devices?

The same authenticator account can be added to multiple devices if you do so during initial setup. Scan the QR code with each device you want to use. However, once setup is complete, you cannot add the same account to additional devices without resetting your MFA.

What happens if I get a new phone?

Before switching phones:

  1. If your authenticator app supports backup (Authy, Microsoft Authenticator), ensure backup is enabled
  2. Transfer your authenticator app to your new phone using the app's migration feature

If you didn't transfer before switching, contact Preczn Support to reset your MFA. Note that this will completely remove your MFA enrollment, and you'll need to set it up again from scratch on your next login.

Why do I have to enter a code every time I log in?

MFA verification is required each time you start a new session for maximum security. This ensures that even if someone obtains your password, they cannot access your account without your mobile device.

Can I disable MFA on my account?

MFA is required for all Preczn accounts. Individual users cannot disable MFA once it's been enabled. Contact Preczn Support if you have questions about MFA requirements.

What if I'm traveling and don't have cell service?

Authenticator apps work offline! The codes are generated on your device and don't require an internet connection or cell service. Just make sure your phone's clock is accurate.
